THE ANATOMY OF SELF-DECEPTION

HOW DOES THE BODY AND MIND INTERACT?

by Mark Abraham

How the body and mind interact has been debated since the time of Plato.  Looking at this subject through the bipolar prism of instincts and intellect in the human mind provides us with a new way of looking at this old phenomenon.  It helps us get much closer to the core of this issue than otherwise would be possible.  The computer technology provides us with an analogy to demonstrate this riddle in a more tangible way. How the computer software and hardware interface with each other and how the body and mind work together are somewhat analogous.  For instance, the different arrangements of the binary numbers of 0 and 1 constitute software made for a certain task. You change this arrangement in the realm of computer science and you will have a different software made for another task.  While that, which is being arranged might be physical, the arrangement itself that is the essence of the software lacking weight, color, volume and so on, is devoid of physical properties.

For instance, in an imaginary experiment, suppose you put a computer with a huge hard drive on the most sensitive scale that can even weigh a speck of dust, record its weight, and then download a huge amount of software into it.  The needle will not move at all, for it only rearranges the existing magnetic elements in the hard drive to match the order of binary numbers of 0 and 1 that defines any particular software, rather than anything physical being transferred into the computer.  Just the same way if you put a human on the same scale and if there were ways to transfer the content of a huge number of complex books into the mind of that person in a short time, again the needle will not move. It is so because both the arrangement of the numbers in the software and the information and feelings transferred into the mind both lack physical properties do not occupy space and are weightless. Yet knowledge, or the mental states of fear, courage, love, hate, greed, and so on, all exist as we are keenly aware of their presence although they lack physical presence…
